LN319 focuses on Language Documentation. The task of language documentation is to provide a comprehensive record of the linguistic practices of a speech community. With its focus on primary data, language documentation is central to all approaches to linguistics, and has come to be recognized as a distinct subfield, with its own methodologies, tools, and theories. Lectures will cover theoretical issues around language documentation and language endangerment, while tutorials and assessment will have a practical focus, dealing especially with fieldwork, recording techniques, software, archiving, and the production of resources for community or educational use. During the semester students will work on their own or each other’s languages, aiming to produce comprehensive and engaging documentation of an aspect of language and culture.
