This course introduces students to the basic concepts in the study of tourism and provides a framework for an understanding of its nature, characteristics and significance in economies n societies worldwide and in Pacific countries in particular. The course applies an interdisciplinary approach drawing on economics and other social sciences. It provides an integrated view of tourism, both as a self-contained subject and as a background for further study.

This course is structured to explore the provision of tourist attractions, facilities, and services as business activities. The components of the course address ideas and concepts surrounding the development of a business plan, sustainable strategies (International, Regional and Local), and planning concepts in the tourism industry. The course incorporates practical applications from different industry sectors including (but not limited to) accommodation, tour operations, and facility management. The topics and projects will be focused on these areas with emphasis on practical industry application.

Other areas of the course include ecotourism, visitor impact management, interpretation and education, economics, and marketing. Case studies are incorporated into each topic area for a comprehensive review of sustainable tourism projects in other areas of the world.
