Ethical conduct is regarded as a requisite for good governance and the enhancement of trust in social relationships. In recent years, the world at large, including Oceania, has seen major scandals and corruption involving executives, senior government officials and board members of corporations. These have resulted in financial repercussions as well as loss of confidence in institutions in both the public and private sectors. Those at the heart of such scandals were often educated at the best universities in the world, yet they lacked personal integrity and ethical standards. It is in this context that ethics (which is an important discipline in itself) is being introduced at USP. Our objective is to encourage students to develop a framework for evaluating ethical issues, standards and actions in their daily lives as well as in matters of governance.
