Current political ideologies emerged out of economic, social and political struggles that came to define the contours of the modern world. Although most ideologies originated in the West, opinions as to their impact and relevance to the rest of the world have been divided. This an introductory level course on historical development and the impact of traditional and contemporary ideologies on politics, political theory and international politics.

A study of political ideologies is essential in analysing the content of political thought and practice. Political ideologies provide a framework for understanding various ideas, doctrines and theories advanced by political theorists as well as their impact on political parties and their policies. A study of political ideologies  is therefore a pre-requisite for a more critical and informed understanding and analysis of topics covered in other politics courses, particularly in the areas of political behaviour, comparative politics, political theory and international politics.
